Hibernation

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom,” Aristotle.

Sitting on my back porch the sound of snow melting from the roof and hitting the slushy puddles below faintly reminds me of an alarm clock going off. I feel it inside me, the weather is changing, break up season is here! My brain and my body for that matter have some what felt like they have been in hibernation right along with an old grizzly since late October. Everyday the urge to get out and put my boots to the dirt so to speak gets stronger and stronger. The days are starting to get longer, and the sun never felt so damn good. Listen I am not saying that I don’t enjoy the winter here, because I do. There is nothing more amazing and aw inspiring than watching the earth around you become some dream like, white, winter land. It’s just a personal awaking more than anything right now. I feel myself growing and changing it almost seems with the season. Like spring and the thought of summer are running parallel with something going on inside of me.

Whatever maybe I am being dramatic, either way matters not, it feels really good.

I’m sure you might have heard on the news about this big solar flare from the sun a couple weeks ago. The northern lights were quite amazing and seen all around the globe. Lucky for us we had a couple nights where from just our front yard we could check them out. They really are amazing to watch and just as quickly as they appear and dance around on the sky, they are gone again. My camera is just a nice little point and shoot so the quality of the photos aren’t great, but still pretty cool looking right!

This winter was far more intense than last year, at least in terms of temperature and snow fall. There were months here where the high’s stayed below zero. Weeks where it was as low as -30. We spent many, many days inside. Did a lot of painting, video gaming, movie watching and just hangen out. I have been really blessed to have met some pretty awesome Alaskans. I love most everyone I have met here. It’s those friendships that you build that keep you going through that intense of a winter. This place is no joke sometimes. The mental and spiritual strength it takes to endure being at home raising babies and keeping house while your man is gone for weeks at a time has been one of the greatest challenges I have come across thus far in life. But you know me, I love a challenge.

I wanted to share the last of my photos from this winter. There are a few of the kids at a friend’s house riding on mini size snow machines. That was a fun day, thanks Barney! Also the pictures of my backyard where just a few days ago a man came out and spent the entire day clearing away feet of snow from around the house into the middle of the backyard. All the snow close to peoples homes melting too fast can cause flooding in your home, so it’s a good idea to try and push some of it as far away as you can.

One last thing, with summer fast approaching all of you in Texas need to start figuring out when and if you can come visit!!! As always, take care everyone and God Bless!

2011 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,400 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 40 trips to carry that many people.

Sun Rise to Sun Set and All the Snow That Falls and Glistens

Every inch covered in snow

This winter has been anything but a boring one. Starting out with weather 20 below and snow showers every day, then warming up to the 30′s, leaving behind an ice rink that covered the ground. With Christmas behind us we are looking at colder temps again and snow that starts and won’t stop for 16 hours. Every branch of every tree is covered in at least 4 inches of snow. If you were to stand in the middle of my back yard right now I would say the snow would hit your knee cap if not higher. It is a beautiful scene to wake up to. Sitting by the window watching the giant snow flakes stack up on top of each other as they slowly fall to the ground keeps me captivated for hours.

Branches of trees fall to the ground from the weight of the snow.

St. Augustine once said “The nature of God is a circle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.” I feel like he must of been inspired by some great, alluring, beautiful place like Alaska to have written those words. Alaska brings out the immensity of my free spirit. I feel myself thriving and wanting more. This feeling never gets old. The longer I am here, the more I know with out any doubt that I never want to be any where else. I was lucky to meet Adam and have that great love in my life, and I am now doubly blessed to have yet another great love in my life, the last frontier.

Our first Christmas here was everything I had hoped it would be. Kids with huge smiles on their faces all day long, a happy husband with a beer in his hand, the dog running and jumping through piles of boxes and wrapping paper and me standing back and absorbing every minute, every memory of it. We had a guest too to keep us company this year. My father in law’s Godson Eric. He was a doll and am so happy he got to share our Christmas day with us.

Here are a few pictures from our Holiday I wanted to share with you all. I hope soon we can get back out to Hatcher Pass and do some more sledding/snowboarding. It’s a little cold out there right now so staying inside curled up on the couch with a blanket is hard to walk away from! But soon I promise more outdoor pictures to come! Take care and as always God Bless!

Somewhere in Between

I find the last couple months to be a mixture of very happy moments and a few dazed and confused cold winter nights. This being the second winter for my family here in Alaska it’s no longer about beginnings or every moment existing as that “new experience”.  Rather the reality of where we are, the truth of being so far away from everything I have ever known and the concreteness of this place staying my permanent home for the near future is daunting. This is my self doubt coming out right now. I know I am a “city girl” in the sense of where I was born and raised and lived my life with all the amenities offered there, but truthfully I always was looking for something more. Moving to Alaska seemed to serve as the place I was looking for, something different and exciting, and it has been too. I just feel like I have reached a plateau again. Some might say it’s the lack of sun, or the below zero temps that mess with your head, but honestly anyone who has known me long enough knows I tend to get bored easily and am always searching…. I like that about myself though. It keeps me from ever settling for something less than what I need or what I want.

The greatest part of my life right now are my two amazing children. They are these incredible little people who inspire me and surprise me with their passion, love, understanding and fearlessness for life every day. I know if all I did for the rest of my life was raise these two beautiful babies I would be proud. My eldest, Trent, appears to have fit into the Alaskan life style better than any of the rest of us. I can not put into words how much joy it brings me to see him succeed like he has here. How much he grows and learns everyday is amazing. I think he passes this zeal for life onto his sister too. She is blessed to have an older brother like him.

Yesterday the sun did finally come out for the first time in weeks and we were able to make a trip up to Hatcher Pass. I want to share a video I made of Adam and his friends attempting to snowboard. I can’t tell you how funny it was to watch my husband fall down as much as he did. We had a blast though and I hope to have some more sunny days again soon like this one.

I have a few pictures from the last couple weeks to share with you all too. I hope going into December that this post finds everyone happy and healthy. God Bless always.

Reindeer and Snow Topped Mountains

This past weekend my family and I took a trip to a large reindeer farm nestled at the base of the Chugach mountain range in Palmer, AK. The view of the mountains was gorgeous. Clear skies, cold air and warm sun made for a beautiful late afternoon.

Finding the reindeer  farm  is easy. From  Wasilla you take the  Palmer-Wasilla Hwy to  Palmer. Take a left on  Glenn Hwy, then right on    Arctic going out of town.  It  will turn into Old Glenn  Hwy. Go about 7 miles till  you reach the blinking  light, then take a right.  The farm is on the right.

The cost is only $10 per person with 2 and under free. You get to tour the reindeer by getting up close, walking around with them and even feeding some. There were pony rides for kids 12 and under, and two snack stands with fresh popcorn all day long.

We were taken on a tractor ride into a pasture where they had a giant hay bail maze. The kids really loved this! Sophia, our two year old, ran around like crazy loving every minute of the search for the end. Trent even said the maze was his favorite part. They had a few characters there giving candy out to the kids too. After you found the end you were by a fence line where you could view elk on the other side. Several of them had sweet, little babies that I enjoyed so much watching.

I really recommend checking this place out, especially if you have kiddos. Their website is http://www.reindeerfarm.com.  At Christmas time they have Santa and elves and a holiday light show. We will be going back to see that for sure!

Rays of Light

I love the rays of sunlight as they break through the yellow leaves and beam down on my face, bringing comfort and relaxation  from the cool, nipping autumn air. I tug at the scarf wrapped around my neck. Zipping up my jacket I look at my children to make sure they are bundled up as well. Sophia’s nose has started to run again, and I am happy I remembered to stick some tissue in the pocket of my  jacket. My son Trent and our new puppy Sampson have already taken off  from the beach of Mirror Lake to the swing set several feet away from the shore line. I can smell the scent of red berries in the Forrest that have started to rot. I don’t find this scent pleasant, but most Alaskan’s would say they enjoy it, a reminder of hunting season which for many residents here is something they still rely on to help feed their families through out the winter.

I am reminded daily of this radiant and unyielding gift that Alaska gives me. It is God’s brush stroke that created these rivers and mountains; these trees that tower over me. The wind that whispers through the leaves eliciting a smile from deep inside me. I am happy that my children know this place. They are growing up in such a different world than I did. They get to experience so much more freedom. A freedom that I found a fast moving city can rob from you. Alaska is a place that gives your imagination and heart room to roam wherever you want, to dream and experience things in life only made possible by the organic surroundings of an untamed frontier.

This sincerity of the nature here gives you a mental clarity and knowledge that no library, no text book, no museum or world’s smartest man ever could. The cycle of life here remains unmatched for me compared to any other existence I have ever lead. I am so grateful for where I am.

September Winds Bring Fall to Life

I woke up two mornings ago to a crisp, cold wind. I brought my coffee upstairs and sat on my back porch looking up over the tall tree line. Then I noticed her, Fall, she had finally returned and with her a 15 degree drop in the temperature over just one month. I noticed the color of the leaves on the trees were becoming more yellow and less green, it seemed almost by the hour. There is a feel in the air I remember quite well.

On the 28th of this month it will have been one year since I first arrived in Alaska. I remember it like it was yesterday. Getting off the plane and smelling the fresh mountain air, feeling the pure, unrefined wind blow against my skin. There was something magical about arriving in Alaska when the trees are at their best Autumn colors, and the air is chilly, but not yet bitter. Finding myself going into my second year here I am filled with peace and a longing to dig my boots out of the corner of my closest, put on my favorite sweater and cook some warm comfort food, maybe a soup or some home made muffins.

My family was blessed with a new member this past week. His name is Sampson Goodman and he is a 2 1/2 month old Weimaraner. He has only been with us 4 days but has already become a part of my heart that will always be there. He is warm and sweet, playful and funny. He is as much work as my almost two year old daughter and is as much fun as well! The kids love him and Adam is currently taking a nap with him on the couch so I would say they are getting along good as well. I have never had a dog before, but can see clearly now how these beautiful, sweet creatures are called “man’s best friend”.

I wanted to share some pictures from the last couple days with you all. I hope everyone in my home state of Texas is getting along okay with this miserable, heart breaking drought. I know many have lost crops, live stock and the wild fires have destroyed so much. Please know my heart and prayers are with you all. God Bless!

Walking My New Baby

On our afternoon walk today we stumbled upon an old home in the woods for sale. It was a really neat house and we had a blast checking it out.  To help tell you the story of these photos I imagined an old man who had lived here for many years and collected all sorts of memories and nick knacks. I hope you enjoy these.

The only place he called home.

Simple and sturdy, just like him.

Outhouse with out Walls

He will miss the summer birds.

Winding down to his favorite fishing spot.

It had been a while.

Old friends.

Holding on to other days.

The last time this hot tub was used he still had black in his hair.

The Sauna House

The smell of oiled cedar still lingered inside.

Untouched too long.

His chariot back then, but since long forgotten.

His memory will fade like the paint of his chariot.

I hope the fire will burn again here one day....
